Himati's Case

FROM A UPMin STUDENT CONCERNED ABOUT SUPPRESSION OF CAMPUS JOURNALISM:

I am a concerned student who was just informed by a HIMATI insider of the current dilemma the paper is going through. The chancellor refuses to sign the documents which will release the paper's funds for its printing unless she gets to read the contents of HIMATI before it gets printed.Kulang na lang talaga yung printing ng HIMATI and they could not go through it because she would not sign the papers yet. I am afraid that this could be her measure to screen and censor the articles written about her since most of the contents of this year's first HIMATI release is about issues of her recent investiture. I don't think she has the right to do such thing. I think that right now she only has the privilege to demand that the papers be presented to her before she considers signing the documents or not. HIMATI is the student's paper and it should not be controlled by the Chancellor or any other university official. She should not take away HIMATI's right to use the paper's funds for its publication.

I totally agree! I think you need to rally the support of the league of campus journalists in Davao and get the assistance of the student regent in Diliman. The contact number is available at the UP website. Good luck and I hope the Himati sees print soon. :-)

Students have the right to the resources in producing their OWN school paper because that's THEIR paper, that's the medium where they can express their SATISFACTION ANG ANGSTS about UP LIFE and the OUTSIDE WORLD and the only thing GCR can do is to guide them, NOT TELL THEM WHAT TO DO AND WHAT NOT TO DO. Para que naging iskolar ng bayan sila, kung tingin ni GCR mga inutil at bobo sila. D bah?

good day. im tiara mejos, editor in chief of himati. we appreciate all the concern, but a few issues presented in this entry should be cleared first:

'The chancellor refuses to sign the documents which will release the paper's funds for its printing unless she gets to read the contents of HIMATI before it gets printed.'

-- GCR did not refuse to sign the documents for the release of Himati's funds. there was a new requirement, in this case, a letter of approval from the chancellor for the release of our funds, which we were not aware of.

after being told about the new requirement, we approached GCR, submitted the letter for her approval, which she signed and even instructed the people from the budget office to release the funds as soon as possible.

the purchase request came out last wednesday afternoon. himati's first release is now in tesoros and will be delivered today.

'...she gets to read the contents of HIMATI before it gets printed.'

-- last wednesday GCR asked for a meeting with the staff of himati in answer to a letter we sent to her office asking for a copy of the budget proposal of the investiture (no liquidation papers yet). this happened after she approved our request.

what GCR asked to read was the draft copy of the investiture article, to which i replied that i will have to consult the editorial board first. the editorial board has decided not to comply with GCR's request.

on a personal note, yes, i am a bit wary of the new requirement. i've been with himati for 2 years and this is the first time that we were made to ask for the release of our funds from the OC. i am of the knowledge that this could open the publication to admin repression, as she can choose to sign, delay, or ignore the request.

but if the OC or anybody else for that matter, will try to repress Himati’s freedom to write and publish, we will immediately notify not only this blog but all the pertinent offices, the media, and the students.

yours truly,
